All-inclusive resorts in Puerto Rico

Finding an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Rico is no easy feat but with some creativity and a few careful calculations, you can replicate the experience.

Unlike many of its Caribbean neighbors, in Puerto Rico you won’t find the familiar all-inclusive resorts—RIU, Sandals, Club Med, to name a few. Unlike the behemoth resorts and gated compounds long favored by the Dominican Republic and Mexico, visitors to Puerto Rico are encouraged to get out and explore everything the island has to offer—including its traditional cuisine and incredible landscapes.

Puerto Rico’s first true all-inclusive resort, Dreams Puerto Rico was originally scheduled to open in 2018. Thwarted by Hurricane María and the pandemic, inauguration plans have now been delayed—to 2022, at the earliest. Located in Guánica, on the south coast of the island, the resort will feature 250 rooms, a spa, kids clubs and a variety of water sports.

Several hotels and paradors offer meal plans and custom packages that mimic the all-inclusive concept. Always be sure to read the small print so you know exactly what the package includes. Far from a traditional “all in”experience, most hotels in Puerto Rico—except for the Wyndham Grande Rio Mar—do not provide unlimited alcoholic drinks, all day grazing or complimentary entertainment.

This expansive resort may not get the attention of its flashier North Coast neighbors. However, following a major restoration it’s one of the best value hotels in the upper mid-range category. With its eyes on the Atlantic and El Yunque as its backyard, the Wyndham puts several of Puerto Rico’s bucket-list attractions within easy reach. Previous guests applaud the hotel’s impeccable service and attention to detail. Amenities include three pools, two championship golf courses and 13 tennis courts. Three-night, all-inclusive packages are offered year round and include breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, along with unlimited alcoholic (house spirits and wine) and non-alcoholic beverages during restaurant and bar hours. There are five restaurants to choose from, so unless you plan to dine off the property, it’s a great deal. Packages also include a round of golf, use of the tennis courts, tee-time discounts, and a casino coupon.

Located on Puerto Rico’s beautiful, less travelled Southwest Coast, the Copamarina offers several all-inclusive food and beverage packages, ranging from couple’s gourmet dinner events to complete meal plans. The resort provides unrivaled access to Guánica State Forest and Gilligan’s Island—reached by a private ferry from the hotel’s dock. Two swimming pools are surrounded by lush, landscaped gardens and the resort overlooks a private crescent beach.

Remodeled, tropical-themed rooms are appointed with modern creature comforts and boast spacious bathrooms and either a patio or balcony. Families in need of extra space can choose from one-bedroom apartments or a spacious private villa with three bedrooms. Child- and teen-centric amenities include a playground, a volleyball court and babysitting/childcare (surcharge). On-site dining options include the elegant, chef-driven Restaurant Alexandre, serving contemporary Puerto Rican specialties, and the more family oriented, Las Palmas. The “American Deluxe Plan” ($127 per adult) includes breakfast, lunch and dinner (with two glasses of house wine).

Home to one of the best restaurants in town—La Ana de Cofresi—this family-run hotel has been a treasured landmark for over 50 years. Facing the ocean, front and center of everything Rincón has to offer, the hotel’s location, charm, warm service and amenities set it apart from its peers. A playful tropical theme illuminates the cozy public spaces and light, airy rooms. There’s a large swimming pool, game room, gym and ping pong tables. Room options range from spacious standard and deluxe rooms to fully equipped family apartments. The “Deluxe Couples Package” includes two nights, breakfast and dinner daily, a bottle of champagne and a T-shirt; $625 per room (based on two sharing).

This lovely parador is tucked into the less visited, southeast corner of the island. Less than a 5-minute walk from beautiful Playa Punta Tuna, Parador MaunaCaribe combines a stunning beachfront location with a family-friendly vibe. Simple, comfortable rooms and an array of amenities are impressive for his price point. There’s an infinity pool, a fitness center and manicured grounds with plenty of chairs and hammocks. The 52 guest rooms are appointed with satellite TV, air conditioning, a private bathroom, a microwave and a refrigerator. Two-night, all-inclusive meal plans include breakfast, lunch and dinner in the al fresco restaurant which specializes in traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and creative seafood entrees. All-inclusive rates (alcohol is not included) for two nights start at $379 per room, based on two people sharing. Note that the resort only accepts children over nine years.

This welcoming family-friendly inn on the Southeast Coast has simple, comfortable rooms, family-friendly amenities and a prime location facing Lucia Beach—known for its copper colored sand fringed with palm trees. The 34 rooms are clean and comfortable and have tiled floors, tropical décor and thoughtful amenities, including satellite TV, air conditioning, a small refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker and a private bathroom. There’s a swimming pool, an outdoor terrace, and basketball and volleyball courts. Chairs and hammocks scattered across the well-tended grounds inspire relaxation. The restaurant serves Puerto Rican classic dishes along with international fare, fresh seafood and vegetarian options.

All-inclusive resort packages, based on a three-day, two-night stay include daily American breakfast with coffee and juice, lunch and dinner with non-alcoholic beverages, and dessert. All gratuities and room taxes are included.
